What Is Valve Sinkage?

Valve sinkage is the vertical distance between the bottom surface of the valve and the bottom surface of the cylinder head after the valve is installed.

As the engine accumulates operating hours, repeated contact between the valve face and valve seat causes gradual wear. This wear allows the valve to sit deeper inside the cylinder head, increasing the valve sinkage value.

How to Inspect Valve Sinkage

During cylinder head maintenance:

1. Thoroughly clean the cylinder head.

2. Install the valve in its original position.

3. Measure the vertical distance from the bottom surface of the valve to the bottom surface of the cylinder head using the appropriate measuring tool.

4. Compare the measurement with the specified limits.

If the measured value falls within the specified range:

• Remove the valve.

• Inspect the valve face.

• Inspect the valve seat sealing surface.

• Check for abnormal wear, pitting, burning, cracks, or corrosion.

If the valve sinkage exceeds the permissible limit, the cylinder head should be replaced to ensure reliable engine operation.

Valve Guide Clearance Inspection

The valve guide keeps the valve stem moving accurately during engine operation.

Over time, friction between the valve stem and valve guide enlarges the clearance. Excessive clearance reduces valve stability and sealing efficiency.
